A staff writer for C/Net News has been taking a Summer road trip through the Southwest, and one of his stops was Taliesin West. The article is basic, but I like to read about the reaction of non-acolytes (or acolytes about-to-be) to Wright’s work.
Accompanying the article is a gallery of what turned out to be pretty good photos of Taliesin West — at least I think so, since I haven’t been there yet. at least they avoid the cliched shots, and manage to capture at bit of the feel of Wright’s architecture.
For Wright, canvas ceilings were vital because of the way they allowed in the appropriate amount of light during the day without requiring heavy electricity use or casting the kinds of shadows that make it hard to do architectural drawings.
That’s why nearly every room at Taliesin West has canvas ceilings, and though that’s counter-intuitive, I was a quick convert. It makes a room feel comfortable, airy, not too bright and entirely usable.
