Water Dome and FSC Omnibus Post

Here is a collection of Water Dome and Florida Southern College links for those newly interested in Wright’s Florida work.

Here is a video of the introductory remarks and the activation of the Water Dome on Thursday. The video of the Water Dome in action is anti-climatic — more, I think because of the angle and […]

Zaha Hadid

Included in The Guardian’s recent survey of Great Modern Buildings is the Phaeno Science Center designed by Zaha Hadid. Hadid has been chosen to design the proposed expansion to the Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

About the Phaeno Science Center, critic Alice Rawsthorn wrote

Hadid herself has described the Phaeno as a favourite […]

Japanese Painting Exhibit at the Smithsonian

Beginning November 10, the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is hosting the exhibit Patterned Feathers, Piercing Eyes: Edo Masters from the Price Collection. The Etsuko and Joe Price Collection — one of the finest collections of Japanese art in the world (a recent, four-site tour of the collection in Japan drew 800,000 visitors) began with […]

Water Dome Video

The Ledger.com, (the website for the Lakeland, Florida newspaper) has video of the Water Dome ceremony. It includes comments by Anne Kerr, president of FSC, Phillip Allsopp of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Jeff Baker, the preservation architect who has been working on the Wright structures at Florida Southern.

(Watch the end of the video […]

Westcott House website

Here is a site with photos and background information on the Westcott House — Ohio’s only prairie-style home. Springfield, Ohio is a bit out of the way, so if you can’t make it, this may satisfy some of your curiosity.

The site also has nice pictures of Wright’s stained glass from around the country.

Original Water Dome renderings

Someone has posted some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s original drawings for the FSC Water Dome on this thread over at the Wright Chat section of the Conservancy website. Go take a look — they are as impressive as you would expect.

Waterworld

3,000 people were on hand to see the Water Dome turned on for the first time:

They cheered, counted down and even did the wave, waiting for the moment when 74 high-powered water jets finally would create the 45-foot-tall circular cloak of water Wright penciled into the heart of his Florida Southern vision more than 60 […]

A point of style

(You’ll have to have read Mark Hertzberg’s most recent for this make any sense)

The use of the phrase “drink the Kool-aid” is offensive. Deeply. We all know the event that it references and to imply that a group of well-meaning, engaged architecture enthusiasts are so in thrall to the personality cult of Frank Lloyd Wright […]

Woo-hoo!

Tonight the Water Dome on the campus of Florida Southern College will turned on — for the first time functioning as Frank Lloyd Wright intended, at the center of his FSC designs.

A Discovery Channel crew will be on-hand to film, so all of us will have a chance to see it in action.

I’m hoping that […]

TANSTAAFL

The more I think about some of what Mark recounted in his conference recap, the more I feel the need to pen an editorial rant, despite the fact the the coffee-maker has been replaced and the caffeine fuel monkey on my back is currently sated. If it appears, just consider my half-baked, wrong-headed ravings the […]
