Weltzheimer-Johnson House

On Saturday, I made it out the “Moving Day” event at the Weltzheimer-Johnson House in Oberlin, Ohio. The event was nicely done, and the tour experience was as good as always.

Weltaheimer-Johnson is worth the trip for anyone who lives in (at least) the northern third of Ohio, or anyone traveling through Ohio on the […]

[Travel] Duncan House in the NY Times

The New York times has an article on the Duncan House, the newest opportunity to rent a Frank Lloyd Wright house for an overnight stay. Nicely done.

On one level, staying in the Duncan House was a trip back to the 50s. We tried out the period furniture — an Eames chair, a Formica kitchen set […]

[Websites] Bernard Schwartz House Website

Either it’s new, or I never noticed it before, but the Bernard Schwartz House has an updated website, with a longer History page (with a few historical photos of the home in a nearly-but-not-quite-completed state), an expanded photo section, rental information, availability and a schedule of tours (first sunday of every other month, $7, reservations by […]

[Events] Unitarian Meeting House tours resume

The Unitarian Meeting House in Madison (technically, Shorewood Hills) will resume guided tours this May, after a lengthy hiatus due to construction (we missed seeing the interior last July). The Friends of the Meeting House are also looking for volunteers to lead tours — contact them through their website.

[News] $2.5 million for Darwin Martin

The Darwin Martin complex has received a $2.5 million gift for the construction of the Toshiko Mori-designed Visitor’s Center on the site.

From Wilson and Eleanor Greatbatch (Wilson was an early innovator of the implanted pacemaker), the gift has spurred construction of the long-planned Visitor’s Center — now named the Eleanor and Wilson Greatbatch Pavilion — […]

[Restoration] Kankakee, Illinois

An editorial appeared in the Kankakee’s The Daily Journal “supporting local efforts”: to bring that city’s two Wright-designed homes (the Hickox and Bradley Houses — conveniently on the same street) under public ownership and to operate them as a cultural destination.

How much it will cost is still an unknown, but we believe the final […]

[Travel] Muirhead Farmhouse

Here’s a newspaper article on the Muirhead Farmhouse, (often, erroneously, said to be Wright’s only farmhouse — what’s Talesin if not a working farm?) and now operated as a bed & breakfast in Illinois.

The article is typical for post-holiday filler — which explains why I’m linking to it — but not totally uninteresting.

Sarah said […]

[Works] On the campus of Florida Southern

The South Floriday Sun-Sentinel has a nice article on the campus of Florida Southern, including a building-by-building run down of every Wright structure on the grounds.

The article points out interesting characteristics of one of the two religious spaces on the campus:

On a recent tour, guide Louise Eastwood talked about Frank Lloyd Wright’s Annie Pfeiffer […]

[News] 30,000 Wright Fans can’t be wrong

Florida Southern College has calculated that its campus draws 30,000 visitors a year to view the 12 Wright structures on the campus — visitors that come from all over the world — especially Japan.

The collection of 12 structures and the 1.5 miles of esplanades that connect them crown the slope of the Florida Southern College […]
